Jaguars Prepares for Upcoming Season

With the season opener coming January 10 against Roosevelt, the Jaguar varsity basketball team began training for next season. “Coming off a 5-7 regular season, the team kept their heads high and only looked forward to next season,” said Varsity captain Jason Vasquez, a senior in the Tech & Media magnet.

Vasquez, as captain, is trying his best to keep his team together and has also been worked hard with his team all summer and fall. As the Jaguars grew in knowledge and strength over last summer, so did the coaching staff, and in numbers. Former JV coach Jason Hicks, now has the job of Varsity head coach and took no hesitation in taking the position.

Coach Hicks has, in fact, been working out his Jaguar team this past summer, wasting no time at all. He has allowed his team to practice in his personal gym in Carson, aside from the gym the school provides.

The team also started participating in off-season games this past summer, fall, and now winter. “Not just myself, but the team feels that coach Hicks has taught us so much about the game already, we all carry a great bond with coach and believe he has brought something better to the table,” said Vasquez. Vasquez said he has much faith in his new coach and what he has to give to his teammates.

Since this is Vasquez senior year, he plans on defeating his cross town rivalry school, South Gate. Vasquez wants both wins against them home and away. “I feel extremely confident against South Gate this year with the team and and coaching staff we have this year. We can do anything,” said Vasquez.

The determination to win has begun, taking two non-conference wins this past week against Robert F. Kennedy Community, 84-28 and Jefferson high school, 66-43. The Jaguar’s next game will be against the 6-0 Wildcats, in Los Angeles, December 14. The Jaguar’s will try to keep their winning streak going to 3-0.
